After doing my initial interview with Wheatie G, I thought it would be perfect to feature his friend Murph Watkins(@MurphWatkins) in my next interview. The track that is featured on this post is called “On My Mind’ which features both artists, and is my favorite collaborative piece between them this year. Check the interview below, and be sure to follow Murph on Twitter to show your support.
1) “The Anydote” was a huge success. You released tracks leading up to the project pretty consistently. Do you think that helped people to download and check out the project?
Well actually the project was entitled “The Plague”. The Antydote is the producer that worked alongside of me to create the EP. He’s not from Chicago but we’ve developed a chemistry and he’s learned my sound more than any producer I’ve worked with has. But to answer your question, I do believe that people wanted a project from me because of all the songs I released prior to announcing it.
2) In your track “The Blaze”, which is one of my favorite tracks from you, you tell a really compelling and interesting story about what you have learned in your life. What inspired you to record that?
Well, there’s a few experiences I never spoke about in songs. The production for The Blaze was sent to me by Dee Lilly. As soon as I heard the beat I knew exactly what I wanted to talk about.
3) You are part of the #200ighties crew. Can you explain a little bit about who started it, and what role you play in it?
I’m actually NOT apart of 2008ighties. Those are my homies though. A lot of people think we are in the same crew because of our friendship, but nah… I’m apart of a duo called “97 Bulls” as well as the crew #WhoBetta
4. It feels like 2013 is going to be a big year for Chicago hip hop. There are a lot of highly anticipated albums within the underground blogosphere. Are you developing your next project?
Yes, my next project will be entitled “Loose Women N’ Booze”, much different from the sound that people are used to from me… But as an artist I wanna show off my versatility. That’s why every song I release always has a different feel than the next. I feel like my project will rank among the best dropped this year.
5) I interviewed your friend, Wheatie G, and asked him how long you and him have been cool, because you have been featured on each other’s tracks for awhile now. Who else do you regularly collaborate with?
Wheatie has been my homie since high school. He’s also apart of the #WhoBetta crew. We plan on releasing a project soon, but no official date. Maybe Decemberish. I’m not really trying to regularly collab with anyone except Creative Gold who is partner in rhyme with the “97 Bulls” and the rest of my #WhoBetta homies. But if I’d have to choose anyone outside my crew I’d say Fonz-E Mak.
6) Who is your central producer, and how do you choose a producer to work with?
I don’t think I have a central producer. I have good relationships with pretty much all the producers I work with. To name a few though: Zel Vinsun, Ty You Genius, The Antydote (of course), Dee Lilly, and A LOT more. I don’t wanna name 50 people lol. I just feel like me and producers connect whenever I give them my artistic vision.
7) Where are you located?
I’m from the south side but I’m currently hiding out in an undisclosed location in Chicago.
8) And lastly, what are you looking forward to doing most this year in terms of music?
I’m looking forward to making my mark on not only Chicago music but the entire underground scene. Last year I dropped some very dope records… This year I wanna drop even doper records and finally get recognition for my work. Believe In Murph Watkins.
